When drilling into Monthly Project Traffic stats in the Admin Centre, how are requests generated for Facebook and Google? What triggers them to be counted?

In a clients Admin Centre, under Statistics, Project Traffic Statistics, Monthly Project Traffic, if you change 'Search All Traffic' to 'Content Managed Webpage ID', add the project webpage ID and click refresh, a new page loads. Then under Requests By Search Engines, Crawlers and Software, it shows several hundred requests for Facebook and another several hundred requests for Google. What do these requests actually mean, how are the requests generated for Facebook and Google and what triggers them to be counted?
